balchikThe small and idyllic town of balchik is located on the northern Black Sea coast.

Balchik is an historic centre and a haven of all kind of activities. The Balchik Palace, once residence of the Romanian Queen Maria and the adjacent botanical garden is a must to see for any tourist visiting the area.

In the palace you will find a wine tasting centre where you can taste and purchase bulgarian wines.

Situated in the northern part of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast it is part of the Dobroudja plain. The landscape of the surrounding area ranges from sandy cliffs to green valleys, and a long coastline, it is very spectacular. The beautiful and well kept beach resort of Albena is situated just a few kilometres to the south of Balchik. Near Balchik is also Balta- a virgin swampland and a forest reserve.

Tuzlata - the biggest healing salt bathing place in the country. North of Balchik are the Shabla and Durankulak lakes. Situated on the principal migration route of birds. It is known as Via Pontica, they offer an amazing view in winter.

Closer to Balchik, but still in the north, the plain descends more sleepy to the sea and at Cape Kaliakra the vertical cliff reaches 70m in height. One can still see the remains of the great steppe that occupied most of Dobroudja in the past.

Kaliakra was given in 1960 the status of national Reservation. It is the only Bulgarian National reservation comprising sea aquatoria, a sea strip 500m wide and 8km long. Kaliakra is a fabulous place you must visit, great views and a museum informing you of the history of this fought over peninsular.
